During a silent period at GRO, I propose to make use of our time and do a new project. As our subject we settled on an oyster knife; a simple, yet fairly unfamiliar object with a strong ritual use and with a wide scope for exploration.

By an hands-on approach of oysters openers we gained useful insights about proportions and their consequences on grip and functionality. Opening an oyster is not as easy as it seems. It requires practice to develop a good technique but it is also key to have the right tool.

This project was all about continually refining and perfecting the designs that I developed to extract the full potential of each concept. For this project we made multiple models generated by hands and computer to test our ideas and incrementally improve our concepts.

Flint

Inspired by mankind’s first hand tools this surprising concept speaks to the visceral quality of opening and eating raw oysters.

Coast

Designed for oyster lovers, walking on the beach ready to shuck and enjoy a fresh oyster.

Perla

A simple but luxurious product for the experienced oyster shucker that enriches the experience of eating oysters at the table.
